My colleague and I are working on a number of articles about this topic. Meanwhile, come check out http://giftedhomeschoolers.org to find a whole online community of families homeschooling gifted kids around the world. You're not alone!

My mother believes that having me skip second grade (partly because I was bored and partly because the second grade teachers at my elementary were dinosaurs) is the cause of the my awkwardness (socially) from then on. I don't think she remembers/realizes I was always the odd one out. When I tell her I might homeschool Rowan and any other children we may have, she wants to argue with me. I think accepting that the public school system did *not* serve me well is too hurtful for her right now. I had a point but I think I lost it. :)

Refreshing perspective. I'm definitely used to hearing, "Every homeschooler thinks their kids are gifted," statement.

I think part of the problem is that the term gifted is vague and subject to much speculation. By our public school district standards, my daughter is gifted and belongs in GATE school. By WTM standards, my daughter is probably dumb as a rock. The reason we homeschool is so that our children have an education tailored to their needs, strengths, and weaknesses. I don't really know if my children are gifted or not, but they are getting an education that challenges THEM.

What I don't understand is the need some folks have to tear down those who do decide to say their child is gifted. What the heck? Why be such a jerk about it just because your child is off-the-charts smart? I think sometimes they just want to have a pissing contest.
