When people ask me about this, I tell them that the most competent homeschooler I've had the pleasure to meet is a woman who dropped out of high school, got a GED later, took a few classes at a Community College and dropped out of that too. When she decided that she would no longer homeschool, all of her children mainstreamed into public school. They were all at or above grade level in their educations and two of them went into "gifted" programs.

Before I met this woman, I was a bit of an education snob. While I didn't think homeschoolers needed a degree in education or even a college education, I did think that they needed an extensive and excellent education of some sort before they should dare launch into home education. Now I think what you really need is the desire to teach your children well.

I completely agree with this post! Wonderfully written.

It is often easy for me to fall back on the standard, "I have a degree," line when interrogated by well-meaning (I hope) friends and strangers, but I don't want to do that to the neglect of genuine self-reflection on my ability to offer my children everything they need.

The truth is that we really do need to exam ourselves on a regular basis to ensure we are providing the best education for our children.

I think I'm printing this one out for my encouragement/dope slap file.
